New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Top Dawg Entertainment recording artist
Jay Rock has released his new album REDEMPTION via Top Dawg Entertainment/Interscope Records/Universal
Music Canada, the country's leading music company.
Recently released single from the album, "WIN", was released May 16. It was immediately featured in Spotify's highly coveted New
Music Friday, Get Turnt and Rap Caviar playlists and has close to 2 million streams on the platform.
Previously released single, "
King's Dead", featuring Kendrick Lamar, Future, and
James Blake, was included on the soundtrack for
Black Panther—the highest grossing solo superhero film to date. Produced by Mike WiLL Made-It and Teddy Walton, "
King's Dead" was hailed as one of Jay Rock's best performances to date by Pitchfork, who noted that "[h]is flow moves at a furious pace but his tone is laidback, as if his regal wordplay is totally off-the-cuff." The Dave Free-directed music video fast follows Rock, Lamar, and
Future in various scenes ranging from the barbershop to life as stock brokers to sitting atop palm trees.
The 13-track album includes features with SZA, Future, J. Cole, Jeremih, and Kendrick Lamar. It follows Jay Rock's 90059 2015 sophomore full-length album. It follows the recent release of episode one of Road to Redemption, a mini documentary exploring Rock's origins both in Watts and with TDE during their formative years.
Johnny Reed McKinzie, Jr., or Jay Rock, was born in 1985 in Watts in Los Angeles, California.
Common for youth living in the Nickerson Gardens Projects, Rock too joined a street gang and landed in jail twice due to the anti-gang injunction enforced in his neighborhood. Rock's roots and life experiences in Watts often make up most of his lyrical content. In 2005 Rock was signed to Top Dawg Entertainment where he released multiple mixtapes, steadily gained a following and critical reception, and eventually landed a deal with Warner Bros. Records.
Jay Rock made his major-label debut with the 2008 single "All My Life (In the Ghetto)" ft.
Lil Wayne & will.i.am. His first album Follow Me Home arrived in 2011, and featured appearances by Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Rick Ross, and Ab-Soul. Released in
September 2015, Rock's sophomore full-length 90059, named after the Watts zip code, debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200. The album featured
Isaiah Rashad, Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray, and more.
