NEW YORK (Universal Records press release) - Legendary soul singer Teena Marie's CD La Dona is the No 6 cd in retail outlets this week. La Dona is the first CD Teena Marie has released in 16 years and her debut CD for Universal Records. Teena Marie's last album to come in as a Top 10 was the 1984 gold selling Starchild, which featured the Grammy nominated hit, "Lovergirl." "Still in Love," the smooth lead single from La Dona retreats back to the soulful beginnings of R&B with a groove influenced by Al Green's hit "What a Wonderful Thing Love Is." Produced by Teena Marie and Cash Money's in-house producer, Mannie Fresh, the track has garnered strong radio airplay, making it clear that Teena Marie is back. As the first artist on Cash Money's new imprint, Cash Money Classics, Teena Marie is building a bridge between old and new school Soul music. La Dona features a fiery collaboration with R&B crooner Gerald Levert on the heartfelt ballad "A Rose," a track reminiscent of her legendary duet with Rick James, "Fire and Desire (1981)." On "The Mackin Game" Teena Marie teams up with hip-hop veteran MC Lyte and the up-and-coming underground hip-hop artist, Medusa, a spicy track that shows women can hold their own weight. La Dona also contains a reunion with soul/funk pioneer Rick James on "I Got You." Teena Marie has garnered an in-store campaign with MAC Cosmetics. Beginning in June, MAC Cosmetics will play the La Dona CD in all 446 MAC locations (department stores included) and will host in-store appearances in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, DC and Atlanta. The cosmetic line will also do ticket give-a-ways in conjunction with each of Teena Marie's performances. Teena Marie is currently doing spot dates around the country.
