Canadian singer/songwriter AKA V drops her latest single "You Say". Written by AKA V, Patrick Phillips and Scott Greene, "You Say" marks a solidification of V's sound. V has been steadily releasing singles for the last few years, artfully trying different things to find a sound that really resonated with her. Feeling that she had a found a sound close to her soul on her previous single "Last Chance," she re-teamed with producer Scott Greene to bring "You Say" to life. The result is a well-polished, pop/rock style that is all her own.
The single's message is both timely and necessary. "You Say" examines that while social media is a necessity today, it is really an impersonal way to get to know someone. As we scroll through a person's feed, the person behind the screen is seemingly intimate and anonymous at the same time.
Through the classic story of boy meets girl, the song follows a couple attempting to build a relationship through social media following their first dinner together. When the boy wants to introduce her to his family, the woman can't help but feel that there is something missing.
Accompanied by pop/rock guitar riffs and pounding drums, V's stand out vocals are perfectly framed by expertly crafted melodies. In fact, "You Say" sits comfortably between gritty rock melodies and familiar pop harmonies, the perfect blend for a love ballad.
Originally from Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, a small town about seven hours northwest of Montreal, AKA V set out on her own to Toronto, Ontario to pursue her dream of becoming a musician. Determined to make it in the demanding music industry, she learned Audio Production and Engineering so that she could record and master her own tracks. While she worked through her education, V also joined the Canadian rock band OzGoode and went on a cross-country tour with them as their singer.
Her journey inspired her 2016 debut single "Always Go Home," and she has since released four other singles, including a cover of PJ Harvey's "This is Love." From those beginnings, she has blasted her way onto the indie music scene and is shaking up the airwaves all over the world. She has even performed over 100 live shows throughout Canada, the US, and the UK.
