Chaka Khan To Be Honored At 24th Annual Hal Awards
New York, NY (Top40 Charts/ Heroes And Legends) Music superstar Chaka Khan, will be presented with the Icon Award at the 24th Annual Tribute to Heroes and Legends, September 22, 2013. The charitable occasion, which raises funds for the Heroes And Legends Scholarship Foundation will also honor Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Siedah Garrett, renowned music manager and brand architect Troy Carter and 1950s doo-wop group Terry Johnson & The Flamingos.

Appropriately themed "Forever Legends," the 24th Annual Heroes and Legends Awards will be held on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 at The Beverly Hills Hotel. The ever- vibrant JoMarie Payton will grace the stage as the Mistress of Ceremonies, and will be joined by presenters Claudette Robinson, Miller London, Marla Gibbs and vivacious Mary Wilson, Ray Parker, Jr. and Billy Vera.

Chaka Khan has the rare ability to sing in eight music genres, including R&B, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, country, classical and dance music. Throughout her career with Rufus and as a solo artist, Chaka Khan has released 22 albums and has earned ten GRAMMY® Awards (and 22 nominations), Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, 1990, for "I'll Be Good To You' (with Ray Charles); and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female (album), 1983, for Chaka Khan. In 1992, Chaka took on a more proactive role as executive producer for The Woman I Am, adding a new dimension to her illustrious career and earning another GRAMMY® Award for her efforts. Her 2007 recording, Funk This, won a 2008 GRAMMY® for Best R&B Album, and her duet, "Disrespectful," featuring Mary J. Blige, won a GRAMMY® Award for Best R&B performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Her music has not only been met with critical acclaim, but has garnered enormous fan support. She has racked up ten #1 Billboard songs, seven RIAA certified gold singles and ten RIAA certified gold and platinum albums, including Ask Rufus, I Feel for You and Masterjam. She also had back-to-back Top 10 Billboard chart hits with the singles "Angel" and "One For All Time" from Funk This. Chaka's recorded music has produced over 2,000 catalogue song placements. This year marks Chaka's 40th anniversary in music and entertainment. The year-long celebration includes the release of a series of new albums and the launch of the Chaka Khan I'm Every Woman Tour. How appropriate that the Heroes and Legends Foundation bestows the Icon Award to this amazing woman during her 40th anniversary year.

Musical wunderkind Siedah Garrett has collaborated and worked with musical giants such as Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau and Sergio Mendes. She has written songs that have been performed and/or recorded by Jennifer Hudson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ella Fitzgerald, will.i.am, Jordan Sparks and Amy Grant , just to name a few. She is the co-writer of Michael Jackson's motivational anthem, Man in the Mirror from his 1987 album, "Bad." Ms. Garrett has been nominated for 2 Oscars: one for co-writing "Love You, I Do," sung by Jennifer Hudson in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, and the second for "Real In Rio" from the 2011 film, Rio. This year she finds her as a guest artist on Quincy Jones' 80th Birthday tour throughout Europe and Asia, and she will appear in her own autobiographical one-woman show, "Siedah Garrett: Behind The Man In The Mirror."

Troy Carter is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Atom Factory, multi-dimensional entertainment and artist management company. Carter has established the careers of numerous recording artists, including multi-platinum Grammy-Award winner Lady GaGa. In 1995 he joined Bad Boy Entertainment where he worked in the marketing department under Sean 'Diddy' Combs and worked with groundbreaking artists such as Notorious B.I.G. In 1999, Carter formed the boutique talent management company, Erving Wonder. The brand quickly became one of the preeminent artist management firms, representing hip-hop/R&B stars Eve, Floetry and Nelly, among others. In 2004, Erving Wonder was acquired by the Sanctuary Group. Carter formed Atom Factory in 2010 where he continues to successfully grow his company and their roster, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Greyson Chance, Mindless Behavior and Priyanka Chopra.

Terry Johnson brought sound and talent to The Flamingos in 1956 with his first arrangement of music and vocals on "The Ladder of Love" and continued with writing and arranging, "Lovers Never Say Goodbye", "Mio Amore." His unforgettably beautiful production and arrangement of "I Only Have Eyes For You" features a prominent reverb effect, creating a dreamy ambience, peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B charts. Terry arranged the music, vocals and sang tenor on all of the songs on the albums "Flamingo Serenade", "Requestfully Yours" and "Flamingo Favorites." After The Flamingos, Terry formed his own group called Terry Johnson & The Modern Flamingos. When Nate Nelson left The Flamingos, he joined forces with Terry and they recorded under the name THE STARGLOWS. They co-wrote and sang "Let's Be Lovers" on the Atco Label, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Signing with Motown Records as an artist and producing partner with Smokey Robinson, Johnson recorded several records on the Gordy Label. He wrote, arranged, and produced songs for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Edwin Starr, The Spinners, Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers, Jimmy Ruffin, Mickey Denton, Blinky and other Motown artists.

The 2013 HAL Awards' star-studded event honors a select group of individuals who have brought honor and dignity to the arts. An additional highlight will be the awarding of scholarships to deserving students of the arts from the Southern California area. The HAL Awards are the brainchild of famed songwriter and Motown Alumna, Janie Bradford. Bradford has written such classic hits as Marvin Gaye's "Too Busy Thinkin' About My Baby," Barrett Strong's "Money. That's What I Want" and countless others. " Our goal is to help talented young people in the community realize their lofty -but- attainable dreams of shaping careers for themselves in one of the many performing arts," explains Bradford. "We do this by providing much needed scholarship funds. Each year our scholarship honorees are selected from a diverse group of candidates who have earned a consistent grade point average of 2.0 or better and who exhibit an extraordinary amount of talent, drive and determination."
