Harris Center Welcome Grammy Award Winner Kalani Pe'a
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Winner of a 2017 Grammy Award for his debut CD, "his voice...his passion for music... will take you to the heavens" (Darlene Ahuna). Kalani Pe'a's path to stardom was anything but direct: he was diagnosed with a speech impediment at age four, and his mother introduced him to singing to help him with words. He's come a long way: in 2017, following his first Na Hoku Award, he was honored by the Hawai'i State House of Representatives as a "torchbearer [recognized] for his accomplishments and continued work on behalf of Native Hawaiians." The Harris Center welcomes Kalana Pe'a in his Folsom debut.

Kalani Pe'a will perform at the Harris Center Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at 7 pm. Tickets are $18-$42; Premium $48; Children, Students with ID $12. Tickets are available online at www.harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 12 noon to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

"Gifted with a gorgeous voice and a flair for composing resonant Hawaiian songs, his debut album established him as a major, innovative figure in contemporary Hawaiian music" (Maui News).

Pea is all about perpetuating the Hawaiian language as evidenced on his debut album E Walea, which means to come together like birds, be elated, be exuberant and enjoy.

It is a rare feat to bring home a Grammy on the first try; indeed, Kalani Pe'a's debut album E Walea took home the Grammy Award for "Best Regional Roots Music Album," but the good news didn't stop there. Kalani Pe'a was awarded the 2017 Na Hoku Hanohano Award (Hawaii's "Grammy") for Best Hawaiian Contemporary Album, making history "as the first Hawaii recording artist EVER to have received a Grammy Award and a Na Hoku Hanohano Award for the same project. No one has accomplished that before" (Honolulu Star-Advertiser). E Walea hit number 1 on the iTunes World Music Charts and number 12 on the Billboard World Albums Charts.
In 2018, Kalani Pe'a was awarded a prestigious Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship.

Kalani Pe'a's sophomore release, entitled No 'Ane'i (We Belong Here), was nominated for the 61st annual Grammy Awards under the Best Regional Roots Music Album category. The 2019 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted on CBS on Sunday, February 10, 2019 - not even two weeks after his Folsom appearance.

Kalani Pea sings everything from classical, musical, ballads, R&B, soul and of course Hawaiian music, which displays well his wide-ranging talents as a songwriter and music composer.

His musical career really began at age four when Pea was diagnosed with a speech impediment; his mother Pua Leonard "introduced my son to singing and music to help him pronounce his words."

Leonard and Pea's father Arthur (Ata) Pea, who comes from a musical family, encouraged Kalani to take vocal lessons and choir and entered him in talent and karaoke competitions.

By the time he was 8 years old, Pea was winning numerous talent competitions statewide. In college, he received his degree in Mass Communications; he also has a background in early childhood education.
"From speech therapy to being a college graduate in communications," noted Pea's father with humor, "Kalani can't stop talking and singing."
