New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Maryland-bred R&B artist, Reggie Becton delivers thought-provoking visuals for his track "Y.O.U," off of his latest project My Beanie's Orange. Influenced by a dramatic romantic-thriller series, Becton takes on the role of a scorned man whose jilted ego spirals out of control, leading him to the point of no return. Beyond the scope of the song, the video takes on much greater meaning, as it dares us to ask an important question about race and the acceptable norms in society. The concept derived from the hit Netflix show YOU, starring Penn Badgley, explores the inner conflict of an obsessive lover so consumed by control it leads him to remove anyone in his path. The visual for "Y.O.U" also dares us to explore the notion that in our current society, black artists are not extended the same creative freedom as most. Becton explains how he struggled with the perception this music video would give, as well as the impact it would have on the black community. "When coming up with the treatment for this, we spent hours on hours just talking through would it even be ok or well-received to create such a visual." That is a strange thing to have to wonder when Penn Badgely's character, "Joe," has been infamously praised and lusted after despite being an obsessive and violent serial killer. Becton went on to share, "We are forced to be more cautious when playing characters of extremities because that has been perpetuated so much in the media." Becton is no doubt determined to tear down those barriers, brick by brick.
