'Mastermind' was originally released on March 3, 2014, by Def Jam Recordings, Maybach
Music Group, and Slip-n-Slide Records. With the support of singles including "The Devil Is a Lie," "War Ready" and "Thug Cry," 'Mastermind' debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 150,000 copies in its first week of release. 'Mastermind' nabbed Ross a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
"It's all about coming from wherever you come from and [taking] it wherever you want to go to," Ross told Hot 97 around the album's release. "The minute you do that that's when you can consider yourself a mastermind."
