The Early Buzz:
"The title track is a standout in a record full of strong songs, with the 30-year-old Nelson taking on the role of sage, looking for a way to bring people together in this era of division."- The Associated Press
"These diverse songs find their balance not just with a subtle mix of rootsy country, folk, pop, soul and Americana, but in Nelson's homespun vocals inviting you to unplug and, well, do what the disc's title suggests."-American Songwriter
"With Turn Off the News (Build a Garden), Nelson conjures a power-pop-leaning song cycle that seeks a better way to live with dollops of Southern gospel and slinky R&B. The band mixes Levon Helm's funkiness, Leon Russell's cagey musicality and Tom Petty's ardor."- The Nashville Scene
"The album features everything from soaring wall-of-sound arrangements (the Roy Orbison-inspired "Where Does Love Go") to wildly fun country-rock throwdowns like the joyous twin-guitar jam "Civilized Hell" - a duet between Lukas and his dad Willie."- Rolling Stone
"Sonically anthemic and fitted with backing vocals from Sheryl Crow, "Turn Off the News (Build a Garden)" is a testament to shutting out the world and enjoying the simple things in life with those you love. The song is refreshing in the fact that it doesn't dwell on the problems of society, but instead tries to instill and focus on the hope for betterment in the future."- Paste Magazine
"A fantastically heady album of topical, existential numbers that fuse road-dusted Americana with eastern sounds, rocksteady grooves and other unexpectedly eclectic jams, seamlessly melded by the band's potent communal chemistry."- Flaunt Magazine
