Antenna Man Embodies No Depression Era Americana
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) The upcoming debut release from Antenna Man sounds like it came straight outta Uncle Tupelo's No Depression era. Mark Wolven's whiskey-drenched vocals immediately call to mind Jay Farrar in an honest and raw story-telling approach. The album, Elaine Jr, recorded at Postal Recording (Margot & the Nuclear So and So's) in Indianapolis, is due out on February 17. The first single, "Guitarless Man" is available as an approved downloadable mp3.

The album sways back and forth through the gentle Autumn winds of the Midwest, with the crackle of radio static almost palpable. As the first song, "Guitarless Man," dials in, the crunch of leaves gives way to the warm swell of a Telecaster guitar and steady rolling rhythm of drums. The music comes from within, but as the name suggests, those thoughts and feelings tune-in from someplace else. Singer and guitarist Wolven explains:

"After trying to come up with a band name for a little while with the guys and failing, I decided I would ride my scooter through one of my favorite cemeteries and not leave until I had found one. I came across a metal sculpture titled 'Antenna Man'. I liked the name because I often feel like I'm an antenna...like I'm picking up these songs from somewhere else. And it's not just songs, I've had several experiences in the past where people's dead relatives spoke through me. I think that we're all antennas in some way. Some of us pick up or acknowledge more than others, but I think it's universal."

Elaine Jr is a self-described antisocial album, exposing a liberating catharsis. A wide range of emotions and feelings are all represented in the acoustic landscape. Whether it's the more upbeat daydream "I'm Your Man" or the grittier, almost grungy "Dead Grinnin'," Antenna Man documents their lives in analog sound. Everyone has a ghost story to tell, but some people just use a different medium to get them across.
