I've been writing songs unknowingly for a long time. I'm always singing, even when I don't realize it, and I get weird looks in elevators and such. When I was younger, my mother thought it was funny that I would sit in the back of every car ride making up my own words to the songs on the radio. I didn't know I was doing this...she told me later in life. I grew up with the hope to do theater and act, and after seriously studying it for a number of years, I realized that my true passion was music and singing. My father played piano my entire life and we used to sing and play together almost on a daily basis. I started to play piano when I was four, and quit lessons at twelve and then played jazz piano until I was a senior in high school. I used to get very nervous about soloing, and refused to do it in jazz class, and always just played what was written. I know I drove my teacher crazy with this, because he believed I could do it. The day I graduated, I picked up a children's classical guitar that was in my house (it was my brothers when he was a child) and, rather than going to my high school graduation party, I took a long walk around New York, and taught myself chord shapes out of an old Simon & Garfunkel book. This new record has been in the works for a number of years. I am glad the record took as long as it did, because it has given me time to become a better songwriter. I still have a long way to go... but I definitely have made some headway. As I mentioned, I grew up with music around me. I was raised in the same building as my grandparents - My grandmother was a violinist, and my grandfather played piano, clarinet and sax as well as writing some sheet music back in the war days. When I was five, my grandmother met me after school one day with a violin. I played for the next five or so years. I actually just got a violin again, and am going to try to learn. I think it is a beautiful instrument. I tend to play most of my sets on guitar now, because most venues do not have a piano...I am going to start writing again on piano though...
