New York, NY (Top40 Charts) "I see a big future for Matthew. Someone asked me in an interview if I thought there could be any more guitar heroes. Well, hell yes, of course, and Matthew is one who will prove that to be true." --
Peter Frampton
"...in the Stevie Ray Vaughan area of virtuosity and originality." --Steve Miller
Who are these guitar legends talking about? That would be none other than 19-year-old singer/songwriter/guitar young gun MATTHEW CURRY. Consider yourself in the know.
Seemingly out of nowhere, MATTHEW CURRY has been creating a serious buzz the past few years, especially 2014. This rising star from the
Heartland of Normal, IL has already seen rock star-like standing ovations at key festivals both in the U.S. and abroad, and the lines for his autograph at the merchandise booths are longer than most headliners.
His rare combination of youth and maturity have been taking audiences, and the music industry, by storm and surprise with his triple-threat talents of compelling songwriting, dynamic vocals, and incendiary guitar work. Now, having released two albums on his own--2011's IF I DON'T GOT YOU and 2013's ELECTRIC RELIGION, both available on iTunes—CURRY is poised to bring his thunderous guitar stylings to even more audiences courtesy of tours where he has the honor of opening for the Doobie Brothers, former
Eagles guitarist Don Felder, and the Steve Miller Band starting next month.
Not only did IF I DON'T GOT YOU get recognized by the International Blues Competition with high marks, the song "Blinded By the Darkness" won in the "Best Blues Song" of the International Songwriting Competition. The same year the album was released, CURRY was one of five international finalists in Ampeg's "Straight Up Tone" competition. And the album's title track was included in NPR's "Heavy Rotation: 5 Songs Public
Radio Can't Stop Playing" feature.
To say that CURRY is excited to tour with some of his idols again is an understatement. He says, "I'm absolutely thrilled to be going back out on tour with the Doobie Brothers! We had the honor of doing a 14 date tour with them last year and it was the time of my life. I grew up listening to the Doobies, so when I got to get up and jam with them it was a dream come true! It's going to be such an honor to share the bill with Don Felder, too. I've always loved the Eagles' music, and as a guitar player, I've especially always loved Don's guitar playing!"
As he continues about touring with the Steve Miller Band once again, "I met Steve for the first time last year. He's one of my biggest inspirations! We had the huge honor of doing a Canadian tour with them in 2014. He really took a liking to us and asked me to jam with them every night on that tour! I've learned so much from Steve, and I'm very proud to call him a friend!"
To coincide with the upcoming tour dates, CURRY is one of only 10 artists that are part of The Fender Accelerator Tour, a new initiative that provides emerging musicians the support and resources they need to grow their fan base and promote their music. As part of the program, CURRY will receive tour support including a customized 15-passenger touring van, promotional and marketing support, and Fender gear, including electric and acoustic guitars, basses, amps and accessories. To keep the tour moving at full speed, Fender is also covering all fuel and vehicle maintenance needs. Covering emerging artists across a wide array of musical genres from alternative and rock to country and singer/songwriters and beyond, the Fender Accelerator Tour will follow the musicians as they embark on whirlwind tours and share their experiences along the way. Each van is equipped with GoPro cameras to capture real-time daily content on the stage and on the road. From the trials and tribulations to the flashes of inspiration, key moments will be documented as they happen and shared by the artists themselves across their own social channels using #FENDERXLR8R. This content will also be shared on all of Fender's owned media channels that currently reach more than five million people each month, allowing artists to leverage the reach and voice of the Fender brand to generate new fans.
"I'm so glad to finally be working with Fender," CURRY says about the Fender Accelerator Program. "My go-to guitar has been a Fender Stratocaster ever since I can remember. I've always dreamed of someday having a 'Matthew Curry' model Stratocaster in music stores all over the world! Fender is the definition of Rock n Roll and they revolutionized music! If you think of all the greatest guitar players in the world, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan,
Eric Clapton to name a few, they all played Fender guitars. And they played Fender guitars for a reason, because Fender is the BEST THERE IS!!!"
Other critical praise has been pouring in since he first hit the road in 2011:
"The Next Guitar God? The Matthew Curry Band kaboomed the show off to strong start, keeping us between rock and a hard place. I could feel the thunderous bass rearranging my internal organs." - Appen Media Group (GA)
"Kid can shout like Joe Cocker, play guitar like a young
Jeff Beck and rock like he's still inside his first pair of shoes." - Edmonton Sun
"To say I was impressed when I caught Curry at The Sapphire Room in Boise would be an understatement. He has it all--unreal-wicked guitar chops and a soulful singing voice that belies his years...he commands a stage with the confidence of a seasoned frontman--and the voice to back up the guitar-note flurries, which reveal influences ranging from
Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan to
Buddy Guy and Albert Collins." - Idaho Statesman
"Curry and his band are making a name for themselves quickly. Combining mature songwriting and bluesy rock licks, the band made the most of their brief set by jamming through with style. Curry's voice was powerful and full of soul as he played like a veteran and shined bright on the big stage. Turning everyone's head, this incredibly talented musician is someone to watch out for." -- CrypticRock.com
