Was Gio Urshela's 2019 Breakout for Real? | Stat Stories
For years, Gio Urshela was what you would call a 4A player. He did pretty well at triple A in the minors, but wasn't quite good enough to stick around in the majors. But then 2019 happened, and now Urshela is a starter for one of the best teams in baseball. So how did it happen?
In this video, I look at just how well Urshela played in 2019, comparing him to fellow Yankees infielders Gleyber Torres and DJ Lemahieu. I then look at how mechanical changes in his swing helped his timing and begin driving the ball more often. His exit velocity and hard hit rate were the best of his career, and those are things that aren't flukes.
I also bring up some of the reasons people think Urshela's season wasn't legitimate. But whether you bring up expected stats or one big month, I think Urshela will continue to be an above average hitter.
