Shirley Bassey - You'll Never Walk Alone / Far Away (1962 Recordings)
1962 (Tis the Season and so here are two Inspirational Songs from Ms. (Early) Shirley Bassey, both recorded as singles in 1962. The first song is the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein classic, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which has been sung by many artists, past and present, over the years. This song was written in 1945 for the musical, Carousel. The second song, 'Far Away' is also an inspirational song and this one was written by Lionel Bart for the musical, Blitz. Another one of Shirley's hits written by Bart is 'As Long As He Needs Me' from the musical Oliver.
Both the songs on this clip are superbly sung by Ms. Bassey, and both singles were top 40 hits for her. Even back in 1962, this wasn't an easy thing to accomplish as most of the hits of the day on both sides of the Atlantic were going to Rock N' Rollers.
LYRICS - You'll Never Walk Alone:
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm Is a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark.
Walk on, through the wind,
Walk on, through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone
LYRICS - Far Away:
Far away, far away,
Though your love may be,
You can dream; make your dream
Real enough to see!
See his face, hear his voice,
Whisper, I love you!
If you dream, if you pray,
Can your dream come true
Can you climb the waters of a fountain?
Can you find the center of a mountain?
Dream you can, pray you can,
Then perhaps you may
Bring your love to your arms
From so far away!
Can you climb the waters of a fountain?
Can you find the center of a mountain?
Dream you can, pray you can,
Then perhaps you may
Bring your love to your arms
From so far away,
Oh so far away!
