Gareth Gates + Jimmy Young - 'Unchained Melody' - Two UK Number 1 Hits

This song was featured in the 1955 movie "Unchained" and several successful versions of it were immediately recorded. Jimmy Young's was the only British recording to hit the Number 1 spot in the UK charts that year. It was his biggest success as a singer but he later switched to radio broadcasting as a disc jockey. The song itself has now become one of the most recorded of all time, with the Righteous Brothers' 1965 version sung by Bobby Hatfield now being considered definitive. Gareth Gates performed it as his final personal choice in the UK TV show "Pop Idol" in 2002, as seen here, and on its first day's release as a single his recording sold well over 300,00 copies. So I thought it would be interesting to compare two British singers, both of whom hit the Number 1 spot in their respective versions of "Unchained Melody," since they couldn't be more different in every possible way!
