In March 2001, Miami was hosting the "Miami Winter Music Conference" featuring DJs and remixers from around the world. One underground track was getting a lot of play during the conference, called New Years Dub by an outfit by Musique. The track heavily sampled U2's New Year's Day, and was a hit in the clubs throughout the conference.
Coincidentally, U2 were in town doing rehersals for the Elevation tour which was opening at the end of the month in Fort Lauderdale. Musique and U2 hooked up during that time and approval was given to use a sample of the original U2 song and to allow them to release it commercially between third and forth singles of the album U2 were touring on. There is also footage of Bono included in Musique's video for this track.
Although U2 had been sampled in many tracks before, it is rare that they have given permission for bands to do so. This is one of those tracks where U2 has given the official 'nod".
