Vera Lynn The Homing Waltz -- Yours Decca F 9959 1952
Before the birth of the 'New Musical Express' single's chart the UK relied on the sales of Sheet Music. There were a few attempts at this until May 1949 when the Music Publishers Association compiled a chart which was published by Melody Maker and the NME up until 1959. the first number one record being 'Here In My Heart -- Al Martino' Nov 15 1952 but it could have been Vera Lynn with The Homing Waltz as Vera Lynn was no.1 in the Sheet Music chart prior to Al Martino, even though Vera Lynn only appeared in the first singles chart at no.9 whilst You Belong To Me -- Jo Stafford at no.2...whoever it was, no-one remembers the runner up.
