Table Manners started as the brainchild of DJ Menace in the winter of 2014. Born out of a need for a place to cut, scratch and juggle, Menace approached co-founder Esq. to organize their crews and soon landed at an urban art gallery, setting up monthly sessions with eight turntables and four mixers so that all of their turntablist friends could come and let loose. No competition, no drama, no required skill sets needed. Just a love for turntablism. What became was more than they could have ever imagined. Word spread quickly and soon hundreds of djs of all levels showed up. Sponsors followed. DJ crews were formed. The Boston nightlife was infected. This spawned the first professional showcase at The Together Festival starring the legendary Rob Swift, who immediately proclaimed that this was the “best thing he’s seen since the 90’s turntablism scene.” Less than a year later and Table Manners is so many things. What started it all is still there, a Sunday afternoon event, once a month, where DJs from all over come to share their love for turntables. The Table Manners DJ crew, a venerable dj band consisting of some of the best musicians cutting up music and performing live on their instrument of choice, the turntable. The nightlife scene, where Table Manners DJs takeover clubs and curate music in the same genre the venue is accustomed to, whether it be Wonderbar’s Wobble Wednesday, or Julep’s Throwback Lounge, but with the Table Manners flavor everybody knows and loves. Q-Bert himself even co-signed the movement, claiming himself as “the newest member of Table Manners.” Table Manners is defined by a love of music, professionalism and friendly competition, and of course, djs. No matter what encompasses the Table Manners movement, one thing is clear, while this crew is around, the turntable will never die.
