The BATJC to me is a place where, I mean as cliche as it sounds, I think it has the potential to transform the world
The Bay Area Transformative Justice Collective (BATJC), is a community collective of individuals working to build and support transformative justice responses to child sexual abuse.
We are based in Oakland, California. We envision a world where everyday people can intervene in instances of violence and abuse in ways that not only meet immediate needs, such as stopping current violence but that also prevent future violence and harm by actively cultivating things such as justice, accountability and resilience for all.
The self accountability part of TJ really speaks to me. I want to practice the things that I believe.
I see the BATJC fostering a world where we can hold the complexities of pain and joy that happen when harm and violence happens, in order for us as a community to be able to navigate those together.
I just imagine a world that transforms into a place where people are willing to take more accountability, and can step up in that accountability and not feel afraid of punishment or retribution.
We’re super excited about the BATJC transformative justice labs, the first one is March 4, and we hope that our community will come out so that they can use this space to be able to practice transformative justice with people in their own lives that they’re trying to work on transformative justice with. We have a lot of education on transformative justice but we have very few practice spaces. We’re going to have all types of small groups this time, and all of these groups have mostly been self organized. So there’s going to be a group for folks who have caused harm, there’s going to be a group of educators, there’s going to be a group for parents, and if you all have a group that you’re interested in, contact the BATJC and we can get it going.
The pods and the labs are really exciting to me because they in themselves are sort of a way of flourishing, so that feels really good.
The labs feel like a chance for us to really practice some of these skills that we’ve been working on.
I think the BATJC is a blueprint for how to actually be in relationship and be in community with each other in ways where, you know, we can take accountability, where we’re expected to take accountability and where we are taking accountability and actually like experience the rewards of it.
