Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient found in some foods. When you don't get enough vitamin C, you're more likely to suffer widespread cell damage, which can lead to numerous health issues. Without sufficient vitamin C, your immune system will not function properly, and wounds will heal more slowly.
Although it is rare in advanced countries, a condition called scurvy can result from a vitamin C deficiency. Symptoms of scurvy include fatigue, gum inflammation, small red or purple spots on the skin, joint pain, poor wound healing, and corkscrew hairs.
Foods that are high in vitamin C include citrus fruits and their juices, kiwifruit, and red and green peppers. Other fruits and vegetables—such as broccoli, strawberries, cantaloupe, baked potatoes, and tomatoes—which also provide vitamin C.
To find out if vitamin C has been added to a food product, check the product labels and information posted in your grocery store.
