Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 1969 Concert Handbill – UCSB

http://www.postercentral.com An original, vintage 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert flyer. This collectible was printed up before the show and handed out, or left on store counters, to entice people to buy tickets. It’s not easy to find a 1969 CSN&Y concert handout, because that’s the year they formed – so most items like this are from the 1970s. And as usual, notice the year is nowhere to be found on this – it would’ve been totally superfluous. This 1969 CSNY handbill measures only 5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall. It was printed on thin, pink paper, so it probably wouldn’t last too long if posted outside in the fall. What I’d really love to find is a 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert poster, full-sized and perhaps on cardboard. I’ve seen a few of those here & there, but not many. Now let’s talk about the first thing that jumped out at you about my 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert flier: the photo on there. Only David Crosby and Graham Nash are pictured! Huh? Where were Steve Stills and Neil Young? I like the way the lettering on this 1969 CSN&Y leaflet is so hand-done, so amateurish. That is just SO sixties to me… a good thing. It looks like they might have even made a little mistake on the word “Surprise” and just crudely corrected it. I’d love to find a 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young window card from this show, because guess what? I attended it! That’s right, this was like my third concert ever, and I have very strong memories of it. Anyway, this 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young show bill is very charismatic in its own way… you just KNOW that it’s not faked or bootlegged. Other than the fact that I can personally attest that it was printed before the concert, because I gathered it myself. I like the way the lettering on my 1969 CSNY slinger is a tad psychedelic, but then gets down to normal printing at the bottom. That may have been the “artist” attempting to mimic the famous Fillmore posters of the era. Can you just imagine if there had been a full-sized 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert placard made of this show… wow. Maybe for the poster, they would’ve known who the “Surprise Guest Star” was going to be! I’m fond of the fact that this 1969 CSN&Y concert herald is from Santa Barbara, which I believe both Croz and Nash have called home at one time or another. And then there’s the UCSB aspect… remember the bank that burned there in the 1960s, at the hands of protesters? I’ve neglected to mention that this 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young street poster states “Sweetwater” as the opening act. They were the L.A. band which was supposed to OPEN the Woodstock festival three months earlier, but ran late, so Ritchie Havens opened instead. This, or actually any, 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young pole poster can’t be too common because these guys performed only 23 shows in the sixties. Woodstock in August was only their second show together, but I don’t know which show # this one was. I haven’t explained the “Special Guest Star” on this 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young broadside yet… after all, I was there! It was Steve Miller that was scheduled to be the mystery guest, but alas, he never showed up. So Dayspring played instead. At the time this 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young event poster was printed, the group was in the middle of recording their second album, “Déjà Vu.” And in fact, they had completed the song “Helpless” just a couple of days before this gig. Anyway you look at it, this 1969 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young show poster fell right in between the band’s appearances at the famous Woodstock and Altamont festivals that year. Imagine this framed on your wall in between THOSE two posters? How cool would that be… This piece of 1969 CSN&Y concert memorabilia was enthusiastically video-blogged by long-time collector Pete Howard.
