Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (Live Letterman 1986)

"After the album came out in late summer 1986, I went on Late Night with David Letterman again to sing True Colors and I was so freaked out. I kept thinking, Oh my God, how am I going to perform? I have to win all these people over and I have to do it quietly, without singing my guts out. I remember my hair was bright yellow with some red extensionsit was very exciting. I had on a Vivienne Westwood skirt and a hat from the Worlds Fair and this really beautiful vintage cowboy shirt that was all kinds of green, so pretty. To capture the spirit of the song, I made everything dark on the stage. And because it was a healing song, I held a little amethyst that was shaped like a heart in my hand, which I didnt show anybody. I was so frightened on that stage and holding on to that amethyst soothed me. And I went to a place that was otherworldly, that allowed me to express my message: You want to heal. Go heal. And so, I learned the power of a whisper." Cyndi Lauper - A Memoir You with the sad eyes Don't be discouraged Oh I realize It's hard to take courage In a world full of people You can lose sight of it all And the darkness inside you make you feel so small But I see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that's why I love you So don't be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow Show me a smile then, Don't be unhappy, can't remember When I last saw you laughing If this world makes you crazy And you've taken all you can bear You call me up Because you know I'll be there And I'll see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that's why I love you So don't be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow
