Is My Ankle Broken or Sprained? - Georgina Tay, Singapore Podiatrist
If you just had a significant ankle injury, it is common to think suspect that you have fractured your ankle. However, X-rays or other imaging tools may show that no bone was broken. If that's the case, why is it so swollen and painful?
There are many common injuries to the ankle that may be causing your pain, including -
• Ligament and tendon tear or rupture
• Nerve impingement or injury
• High ankle sprain
• Talar dome injury or cartilage damage
• Hairline fractures not visible on X-ray
If there are no signs of a fracture on your X-ray, you have experienced a soft tissue injury. However, a key fact about hairline fractures is that they often do not show up on an X-ray until around 14 days after injury. As a result, repeated x-rays or further diagnostic imaging tests may be necessary to avoid misdiagnosis. Trying to leave an ankle injury to heal on its own can lead to chronic ankle pain and arthritic changes within the joint.
Once a soft tissue injury has been correctly diagnosed, fast and effective targeted treatment can be applied to heal the injury and strengthen the ankle.
At East Coast Podiatry, these treatments may include SIS, focal shockwave, specific exercises, footwear changes, braces, different types of casting, or orthotic insoles. If the ankle pain persists despite conservative treatment, surgical intervention may be needed.
