The melody to this song was originally written in 1911 by Charles Dawes, who later became vice-president of the USA to Calvin Coolidge. In 1951, Carl Sigman wrote the lyrics and it was recorded by Tommy Edwards, who had a US #18 hit with it. But then, in 1958, he re-recorded the song and had a #1 smash hit in both the USA and the UK. It remains the only #1 song to have been written by a US vice-president.
