About the song: Born sad is way that I have often felt or described myself, though I believe it has been my life's journey to discover joy and peace and honest love. I wrote this song a decade ago, and cried through writing it. Sometimes songs come to you in a moment of divinity, and sometimes you sit in a writing room with strangers hoping to feel that gorgeous glimmer. Born Sad was alive inside of me, waiting to emerge. I want you to know that the overarching theme with Grief Creature, and undeniably with Born Sad, is that your feelings & trauma & hurt are real. And that your hurt can also exist simultaneously with happiness and connection and peace in other parts of your life. We're all figuring stuff out. Maybe you're born sad, maybe you're not born sad, I don't know. Maybe you're just born regular and then shit happens to you. And then maybe growing up is about unlearning the bad stuff. I'm still unlearning the bad stuff. The most important thing I learned (and that I hope folks who are hurting remember) is that you're never alone in this. There are so many of us who keep coming back up for air, who keep swimming, and don't always know why. The hurt can feel really big. Actually, it can feel like the entirety of your life. Please trust me when I say: it is not permanent. I hope this song, and this album can be a life raft for you in times where it feels really big and scary. I've got your back. xo M
