Nailing Screen Print Quality with Eduardo Carbia | Transom PR in Puerto Rico
Transom PR is one of Puerto Rico’s few screen printing shops. Their ten-year anniversary is this September, so we had a conversation with co-founder Eduardo Carbia to talk about print shop life on Puerto Rico. It’s no small task to start a screen printing business, and even harder when getting wholesale t-shirts and garments is expensive and slow. There’s no one-day-shipping to Transom PR!
The team at Transom has grown to 10 extremely reliable and autonomous employees. “Having good people that you can rely on – they’re the backbone of Transom PR,†Eduardo says. Because of that team and their incredible focus, Eduardo’s able to indulge his hobbies – marine fishing, mountain biking, and more – while his team handles production.
Being a print shop in Puerto Rico does have its perks. There is little competition in the space, meaning large clients like Subway rely on Transom PR to do their high-volume printing. Transom works closely with ad agencies to drive larger orders. What started as a 5,000 piece custom t-shirt order printed on a manual press in their parents’ driveway blossomed into one of the most successful print shops in the Carribean. Because of their location and production capabilities,Transom sells lots of merchandise to the Dominican Republic and other surrounding islands.
Two major things set Transom PR’s team apart:
1. Shop Huddles. The entire shop team huddles for 5 to 10 minutes for large runs of 500+ pieces. This lets them quickly resolve any issues, identify problems on press, and (as a team) carefully check for accuracy. Eduardo points out, “It’s good for the sales person to see the first print come off the press. When you do these huddles, you settle down and it resolves a lot of issues before they start.â€
2. Spoilage. Transom PR will re-print your order if there’s spoilage or errors. They don’t charge for press checks, and take extreme care to meet their clients’ specifications. This means they take extra care to get everything right the first time – and yes, sometimes they fail. “We’re only human,†Eduardo reminds us.
Finally, Eduardo has a powerful piece of advice for any print shop just starting out. “Take the 5 minutes to huddle up before you print the job. You put a lot of time into your orders, so pay a lot of attention to them.â€
