Carrie Danielson - FSU Doctoral Student (Musicology) - Digital Narratives
“Learning to explore, exploring to learn.†Carrie is a PhD candidate in Musicology at FSU’s College of Music. Her research focuses on Sweden’s historically democratic music-and-arts schools, or kulturskolor, and how these institutions act as sites for cultural friction, transfer, and exchange. Understanding not only the immediate needs (e.g., food, housing, shelter) of young refugees, but also the social needs of children is displacement is a high priority. Her work focuses on the inclusion and integration of Syrian refugee children in Sweden's historically democratic music-and-arts schools. She is a recipient of the 2018 SEM Elizabeth May Slater Prize, a 2018 Presser Graduate Music Award, and a 2019 Florida State University International Dissertation Semester Research Fellowship and has presented her work at regional, national, and international conferences in the disciplines of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music education, Scandinavian Studies, and children’s history.
