You’re Breaking My Heart (Genaro-Skylar) by Vic Damone, orchestra conducted by Glenn Osser The best-performing chart record of Vic Damone’s career was this modern-day adaptation of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s popular concert piece “Mattinata” with new lyrics by Sunny Skylar. Damone’s hit spent a full six months on the national singles rankings, four weeks parked at #1. See also the Buddy Clark and Ink Spots versions. Note that Vic re-recorded “You’re Breaking My Heart” for Columbia Records in 1957 (again with Glenn Osser) in a commonly reissued version. It’s lovely...but if you’re looking for his original Mercury single-release hit, this post is the one. THE 1949 HITS ARCHIVE - here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs that made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1949 (some were recorded in 1948).
