Berlin, Germany (Top40 Charts/ Emerald & Doreen Records) Since 2012, go nogo have released a string of single tracks, which in the company of many assorted remixers have gained wide recognition. In many cases, renowned collaborators like Acid Washed, Skatebard, Kaito or Woolfy contributed versions, which were more than supportive for the original tunes.
Eric Schemer and Fred Scholl have now decided, that the time has come to let five originals speak for themselves. Many songs accumulated over the years of which they have picked five to demonstrate go nogo's full range of variety and influences. Every single tune tells a tale, wrapped up in sounds to support their narrative character - starting with the zap noise of changing tv channels in „New Folks" and ending with the NASA-data check-up in „Apollo Go". Singer and producer Fred Scholl paints musical pictures by using Eric's electronically manipulated guitars on a shoegazerish canvas, adding dubbed-out sounds, grounded by different beats at various speed levels.
1. The theme of rumors, gossip and their influence on people's fears is central to Scholl's writing lyrics. In „New Folks" he slips into a character, which derives all sentiments of being overwhelmed by immigrants from watching debates on TV. The narrative style changes from quotes he got from right-wing politicians and the reactions of a xenophobic mob. The music, which supports this social drama is in contrast very tuneful and showcases the lascivious background singing of Austrian actrice, painter and video artist
Christina Elisabeth Reichsthaler. There are clashes of a meandering synthesizer arpeggio and a straight-lined rhythm guitar as well as fluent subsonic bass pads and shimmering guitar layers, all driven by a vivid breakbeat-programming.
2. „Let It Show" is lyrically rather introspective. It lights up the inner conflict of a person who's constantly surrounded by people showing-off to get other people's attention. Hopeless of being recognized at all, he's giving himself to procrastination and withdraws from the world. Musically, the tune has a great variety of guitar sounds, from a bluesy slide to the sixty-ish jingle-jangle and the wall of sound of the appendix - this is Eric's trip. The midtempo-paced disco beat and the sawing bass is in juxtaposition to the playful synth - melody of the chorus.
3. „Doubt One" is a sort of interlude or the prequel to „Sweet Lullaby". It generally is more a jam of two basses, one of a prophet 600 tweaking and a bass guitar. Scholl's chopped voice repeats the phrase: „Give us people what we want, cause all you are is what we want you to be, now! / Is this really what you wanted to be now?" over and over again. There's no answering and the music leaves a kind of void with the listener.
4. There's no sweetness to "Sweet Lullaby", a rather creepy encounter of a killer who can't let go of his beloved murdered victim. The mood is set by an eerie loop running backwards, a leftover from a session with Lisa Stroeckens (see "
Black Hole" by The Robot Scientists, EDR 001). Building the tension with creepy vocal effects and string-samples, the psychedelic effect is full-on, when Eric's guitar and Fred's singing mingle to yield a Doors-like flavor.
