New York, NY (Top40 Charts) For BIRDS OF TOKYO, the last two years have been all about change and renewal. That experience is infused throughout their fourth album, MARCH FIRES, which will be available at online retail outlets on Tuesday,
September 30. To celebrate the release with their fans, the band is embarking on a new round of extensive U.S. tour dates with Irish rockers
Kodaline starting October 18 in Los Angeles, CA at the Fonda Theatre.
For MARCH FIRES, the band partnered with Los Angeles-based producer Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups, Darker My Love) for the highly anticipated follow-up to their breakthrough self-titled album. Creating MARCH FIRES was a journey of exploration and reinvention for the band. It's a story of burning down the old and coming together to build something new.
There was the addition of two new members (Glenn Sarangapany on keyboards and Ian Berney on bass). The new line up consciously reinvented their approach to songwriting with a new Sydney studio space, and they spent time together in a remote French farmhouse helping to blaze new trails. And if that wasn't enough, they traveled to Los Angeles to record with producer Dave Cooley and a new mixer, Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck, The Kooks, Belle & Sebastian).
"We really made a conscious choice to just put a match to everything we'd done before so that we could create something that felt fresh and exciting for us," explains guitarist Adam Spark. "Hopefully people who like the band will feel the same way when they hear it."
Over the course of their first two studio albums (DAY ONE and UNIVERSES), BIRDS OF TOKYO carved out a niche for guitar driven anthems. Lots of touring around Australia gradually turned them into indie chart toppers. Their eponymous third release in 2010 shifted things up a gear with double platinum certifications and hit singles "
Plans" and "Wild At Heart." They received songwriting awards from APRA, had their work voted "Rock Album Of The Year" by their peers and then capped it all off by winning the publicly-voted "Most Popular Australian Artist" at the 2011 ARIA Awards.
Not surprisingly, their heads were swimming. But rather than milk a formula they decided to throw themselves into new ways of being a band. The result is MARCH FIRES. The album's title directly reflects its phoenix-like conception plus, in the northern hemisphere, the March fires are typically a natural source of renewal each spring.
Spearheaded by the album's first two singles "
This Fire" and "Lanterns," MARCH FIRES debuted at #1 on the
National ARIA Album Chart - the band's first ever #1 record. The album was certified gold within four weeks of release, while the triple platinum single "
Lanterns" was the most played song on Australia radio in the first six months of 2013.
Earlier this year, BIRDS OF TOKYO relocated to Los Angeles and released their single, "Lanterns," to U.S. radio, which landed them in the Top 10 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs and Alternative Songs charts. After receiving rave live reviews upon their return to the U.S., the band earned their national American television debut on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in April. While USA Today named BIRDS OF TOKYO one of the "Five Australian Acts You Need To Know Right Now," calling them "one of the country's best homegrown live acts." The official video for "
