Birdman, Dragon 2, And Hobbit Win Big At The 5th Annual Hollywood Music In Media Awards
New York, NY (Top40 Charts) The Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMAs) announced the winners at their 5th annual awards show last night at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. The night's top honors went to Antonio Sanchez, who won Best Score - Feature Film for Birdman, and John Powell, who won Best Score - Animated Film for How To Train Your Dragon 2.

"It's about time drummers get some love. Now we have Birdman and Whiplash. This is shaping up to be our year," joked Sanchez, who opened the show with a drum performance of his score to scenes from the film. "I owe this award to the innovative genius behind the film, Alejandro González Iñárritu. Thank you."

Powell is the first ever recipient of the Best Score - Animated Feature award, a new category to be incorporated into the HMMAs this year. Powell was joined at the HMMAs by How To Train Your Dragon 2 writer/director Dean Deblois and producer Bonnie Arnold. "People ask me why I work in animation - it's very simple: they are the sweetest people, animation people, all of them, especially this bunch. Bonnie and Dean are wonderful," Powell said while accepting the award and showing love to his Dreamworks family.

Howard Shore was also on hand to accept his award for Best Score - Sci-Fi/Fantasy for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and added that he was honored to be a part of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings franchise.

The Lego Movie's "Everything is Awesome" won the award for Best Song - Animated Film, while "Lost Stars" from Begin Again won Best Song - Feature Film. Gregg Alexander, the former New Radicals singer/songwriter, was on hand to accept the award will fellow songwriter Danielle Brisebois. Alexander performed for the first time in 15 years, with Brisebois, joining him on stage for "Lost Stars."

Producer, Trevor Albert, of Glen Campbell's documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me was in attendance to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Glen Campbell and his family. Albert describes Campbell's documentary as one of love, resilience, and the power of song. He also adds that Glen Campbell's journey is "one of the most heroic musical adventures anyone has ever heard about."

Other performances included composers Gwendolyn Sanford, Brandon Jay, and Scott Doherty of Orange is the New Black with their band who are best known for Gwendolyn and the Good Time Gang along with several other independent artists.

Winners were voted upon by music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL), The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, NARAS, performing rights organizations, film music journalists, and music executives.
