PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (North Shore Animal League America) - British soul singer Joss Stone has joined the North Shore Animal League America's efforts to bring attention to the dangerous plight of thousands of pets left homeless in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ms. Stone is very concerned about the conditions under which so many of these homeless animals are struggling to survive along the Gulf Coast and, together with North Shore Animal League America, is urging Americans to help rescue and adopt out as many animals as possible.

"I really liked working with the North Shore Animal League. It is so frustrating and heartbreaking that the animals seem to be the ignored victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita," says Ms. Stone. "We need people to lend a hand and help these beautiful pets reach safe shelter and find loving, caring new homes. I believe that once people are aware of the situation, New Yorkers will want to step up and open their hearts and homes to these amazing animals."

Ms. Stone has just completed a PSA, which is being distributed to more than 100 radio stations in the New York area, asking New Yorkers to help the League in its efforts to rescue and find loving homes for the thousands of abandoned and homeless pets in need during this unprecedented animal crisis.

The League was one of the first animal rescue agencies on the ground in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and during the past six weeks has rescued more than 550 pets from the region. The cats and dogs were rescued from shelters destroyed by the hurricanes and from unsafe, temporary staging areas throughout the region. Since bringing the animals to the safety of its headquarters in Port Washington, New York, the League has provided food, shelter and medical care for the growing number of pets in its charge. The League is committed to reuniting as many animals as possible with their families by posting pictures of the pets on their website; searching missing pet databases; paying the cost of travel for pet owners to the New York City area for reunions; and lining up foster care for unclaimed animals.

"We are so thrilled to have Joss Stone join us in our efforts to rescue so many animals and get them safely out of harm's way," says John Stevenson, President, North Shore Animal League America. "Our goal now is to ensure that if these pets have owners that we find them as soon as possible and reunite them with their families. And for all the animals in our charge unclaimed, we feel confident that with Ms. Stone's help we will successfully place these pets in safe and loving homes."

North Shore Animal League America, located in Port Washington, New York, is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the U.S. Founded in 1944, the League has found loving homes for close to one million dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. More information on the League and its efforts in the Gulf Coast can be found at https://www.nsalamerica.org.
