Washington, Mass. (MUSIC SERVICES) - Arlo Guthrie's live performances are legendary, his wit and humorous perspective enduring. "Arlo's between-song narratives are hilarious, serpentine journeys that expose political absurdities with acute comic timing and an aw-shucks tone of self-effacement that serve as dual tributes to his father's legacy." says the City Pages in St. Paul, Minnesota. From 'Alice's Restaurant' and 'Coming into Los Angeles,' to 'City of New Orleans,' Arlo has held true to the spirit of his father's legacy. He honors Woody's tradition while exploring new ground. '[The legacy is in the songs, the humor, the commitment to keep making the world a little better for everyone,' says Arlo.

Arlo was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody. His mother Marjorie was a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease.

Surrounded by dancers and radical musicians, Arlo grew up influenced by; Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee. He listened intently to the beat poets like Allen Ginsburg and Lord Buckley, and picked with players like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson. He learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in the community of singer-songwriters and political-social commentators.

Millions of people who know the name Woody Guthrie, and are familiar with his songs like 'This Land Is Your Land' or 'Oklahoma Hills.' Nora Guthrie (Woody's daughter and Arlo's sister) has introduced Woody to many young musicians, asking them to create melodies to lyrics where no music existed. Wilco and Billy Bragg, Eliza Gilkyson, The Klezmatics, Janis Ian and many more have recorded these new collaborations. Arlo wrote a haunting melody for his father's song 'My Peace.'

Arlo's latest album, Live in Sydney, captures his warmth and wit. Recorded in Australia, along with Abe (who has shared the stage with his father for more than 20 years) playing keyboards and providing additional vocals and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Titcomb. Arlo intertwines the music and stories that have endeared him to audiences for forty years. The CD is available at www.RisingSonRecords.com.
