New York, NY (Top40 Charts) In the early '90s, the music world had finally come around to acknowledging the tremendous debt that it owed to underground music, and in particular to the fearless, passionate sounds produced by punk rock bands like L.A.'s Germs. As the alternative juggernaut known as Nirvana continued to ascend, Germs guitarist Pat Smear was tapped by Kurt Cobain to fill out Nirvana's line-up, which just made public Cobain's veneration of Smear's former band. This renewed interest in Germs lore brought about a rarities collection that gathered various live performance and rehearsal recordings that provided the band with an appropriate epilogue after the tragic suicide of their late singer, Darby Crash. Called Cat's Clause, the collection saw a very limited release in 1993 and then disappeared into history's aether only to be sought out by diehard collectors the world over. Now, Cleopatra Records will reissue this extraordinary collection on August 7.
The deluxe edition of Cat's Clause contains one full-length CD, two 7" colored vinyl singles (white and blue), a 32-page full-color booklet plus a Germs armband, pin, and sticker - all housed in a gorgeous box. The audio features rare versions of Germs classics such as "Communist Eyes," "What We Do Is Secret," "Lexicon Devil" and others - recorded live at various locations including Hong Kong Cafe in 1979 and Starwood in 1980. The booklet itself is worth the price of admission, containing a full biography of the band written by close friend and fellow punk pioneer Bill Bartell alongside some extremely rare photos of Darby and the gang plus handwritten lyrics and more. Get this now because, unlike the Germs' music and legacy, this special box set will not last forever!
