The Australian director Robert Luketic has conquered the American box office by coaxing Jane Fonda out of retirement and setting her on Jennifer Lopez in a face slapping, hair pulling, fight for survival. Monster-in-Law, a comedy and Fonda's first film in 15 years, topped the North American box on the weekend making $US24 million ($A31.37 million). In second place was another comedy, Will Ferrell's "Kicking & Screaming," earning $20.9 million. Last week's No.1 "Kingdom of Heaven" fell to No. 4 with $ 9.6 million. In total, the top 12 films earned $95.5 million this weekend. A drop of 6.7% from last year.
