DETROIT, (Detroit Branch NAACP)- The Detroit Branch NAACP in conjunctionwith the Council of Baptist Pastors Detroit and Vicinity, SEIU, New ProspectBaptist Church and Fellowship Chapel United Church of Christ held OperationLove Benefit and Concert on September 18, 2005 at Fellowship Chapel. Operation Love reached out to Hurricane Katrina evacuees in the Detroit Area. In addition to being treated to dinner at the Fellowship Chapel Village DomeBanquet Facility, the evacuees received a live phone message arranged by Rev. Wendell Anthony from former President Bill Clinton during the concert.
All proceeds from the concert will go to Operation Love. Among those verysignificant donations was one received by Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson, pastor ofNew Prospect Baptist Church. Rev. Johnson presented the first of two $50,000checks. Donations are still being accepted. These donations will support theNational NAACP disaster relief efforts, and organizations working on theground in New Orleans, the Gulfport area and persons now relocated to theDetroit area. "Operation Love will be a continuous effort to help those displaced byHurricane Katrina," says Atty. John E. Johnson Jr. , Chairman of OperationLove. Over 1,000 people enjoyed the benefit concert.

Among the artists whodonated their time and talent were: The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts,Ortheia Barnes, Black Bottom Collective, Gene Dunlap & Fellowship ChapelAngelic Choir, Fellowship Chapel Mass Choir, Catrina Harding, Levi Johnson Jr. "African Thumb Piano/Kalimba," Luther Badman Keith and his Blues Band, NewProspect Baptist Church Mass Choir, Serieux, Jimmy Scott and Penny Wells. "We are especially thankful to all of our community partners, artists,volunteers and supporters," says Rev. Wendell Anthony, Detroit Branch NAACPPresident.
"We believe our greatness is measured by how we treat the leastamong us. We will go to these areas and place the money into the hands of thepeople working in the churches and community organizations on the ground. "For more information about Operation Love please call 313-871-2087.
