New York, NY (Top40 Charts) The music world honors and celebrates the lasting legacy of George Brown, cherished co-founder of the legendary Kool & The Gang, Songwriters Hall of Famer, drummer, keyboardist, author, husband, and father. On September 13, Brown's posthumous solo project 'Where I'm Coming From,' arrives on Astana Music Inc, distributed by BFD/The Orchard. The album offers an unparalleled glimpse into Brown's life story through a captivating blend of seductive R&B and soul, taking listeners on a transcendent musical journey. "Shawty's Got," the second single from the project, is released today.
"Shawty's Got" follows the release of the album's first single, "What If," a soul-stirring track that delves into the profound questions of life's meaning and the power of faith. Written by Brown nearly two decades ago, "Shawty's Got" is a passionate homage to young love. With evocative lyrics like "Shawty's fine…spending hours on the phone," and "Shawty's got body…sexy lady," Brown masterfully encapsulates the passion and intensity of youthful romance. The track's synchronized rhythmic beat and enchanting Flamenco guitar create a soundscape that is both nostalgic and refreshingly new, elevating the song's charm and allure.
Hanh Brown, George's wife, remarks on the album describing it as a revelation of a new side of George: "It's George as you've never seen him before. His voice resonates with incredible depth and authenticity, while the lyrics are profoundly sentimental. He wanted people to really connect with them, just as they can with the entire album. With 'Where I'm Coming From,' it feels like George's vision has come to life."
'Where I'm Coming From' is a rich tapestry of personal narratives and social commentary, woven into a 16-track masterpiece. This new dimension of Brown's artistry presents a fresh perspective, expanding beyond his legendary role as the drummer in Kool & The Gang. Brown's multifaceted talent shines brightly as he takes on the roles of lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, showcasing his skills on drums, percussion, keyboards, guitar, and bass. Recorded at Alley Cat Studio in Woodland Hills, CA, all songs were produced by Brown, with executive production by Claude Ismael. The album was engineered by Wolfgang Aichholz (Paula Abdul, Sheena Easton, Keith Washington) and Larry Fergusson (Lionel Richie, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer.) George Brown died from cancer in 2023, aged 74. He is survived by his wife, Hanh Brown, and his five children.
In 2023, Brown produced the band's latest album, 'People Just Wanna Have Fun,' and released his memoir "Too Hot: Kool & The Gang & Me." In 2024 Kool and the Gang was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their hit singles include "Ladies Night," "Celebration" and "Jungle Boogie." They've received two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums.
