(Launch) - "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," the glam-rock-themed movie championed by the Stone Temple Pilots, opens Friday in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Based on the off-Broadway play, the film is about a German boy who submits to a sex-change operation in order to marry an American GI and earn freedom beyond the Berlin Wall. Thehitch is that the operation is botched - hence the "angry inch" - and eventually Hedwig is left alone in a Kansas trailer park where he/she picks up the pieces by starting a glam rock band. Stone Temple Pilots helped extend the production's cult status by participating in events surrounding it during the past couple years. When frontman Scott Weiland was in jail, Dean and Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz backed co-creator-director-star John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig for a live club gig in Los Angeles. And just last month in New York, Weiland took the stage for a STP performance dressed as the character.
