NEW YORK (ASCAP Foundation) - The ASCAP Foundation announced today that veteran composer Laurence Rosenthal will be honored with the prestigious Life in
Music Award in celebration of his achievements in film and television music. The award will be presented to Rosenthal during the 21st annual ASCAP Film and Television
Music Awards on April 11, 2006 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
Laurence Rosenthal's career as a film and television music composer spans six decades. Among his best-known film scores are "A Raisin in the Sun," "The Miracle Worker," "Becket," "The Island of Dr. Moreau," "The Return of a Man Called Horse," and Peter Brook's "Meetings with Remarkable Men." He has been nominated for two Oscars, two Golden Globes, and 12 Emmy Awards; winning seven Emmys for miniseries including "Peter the Great" and "Anastasia," as well as for episodes of George Lucas' "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles." Born in Detroit, Michigan, he studied piano and composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY for four years, and then went to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger. After completing military service, he went to New York where he began composing for the theatre, television, and films.
Commenting on the award to Rosenthal, ASCAP Foundation President Marilyn Bergman said: "In continuing the Foundation's tradition of recognizing the distinguished efforts of music creators who have made significant contributions to our nation's culture, we're very pleased to honor Larry with the Life in Music Award in celebration of his achievements in film and television music."
Previous recipients of The ASCAP Foundation Life in Music Award, presented at ASCAP's Film and Television Music Awards, are Van Alexander and Buddy Baker.
As previously announced, "Crash" composer Mark Isham will be presented with ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award at the ceremony. Awards will also be presented to the composers of the biggest box office film music and the most performed television music of the past year.
Founded in 1975, The ASCAP Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging their development through music education and talent development programs. Included in these are songwriting workshops, grants, scholarships, awards, recognition and community outreach programs, and public service projects for senior composers and lyricists.
