DUBLIN, Ireland (Meteor Ireland Music Awards) - U2 and Westlife were the big winners at the Irish equivalent of The Brits and Grammys overnight, at Dublin's Point Theatre.

The Irish rock heavyweights claimed eight gongs at the 2002 Meteor Ireland Music Awards, which was hosted by Irish comedian Patrick Kielty.

They were named Best Irish Rock Band, Best Irish Rock Album for 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', Best Irish Live Performance, Best Irish Video for 'Elevation' and Best Irish Single for 'Walk On'.

Bono took the award for Best Irish Songwriter, The Edge was named Best Musician and manager Paul McGuinness claimed the Industry Award.

Meanwhile, Westlife took three awards, taking Best Irish Pop Album for 'World Of Our Won', Best Irish Pop Single for their cover of 'Uptown Single' and Best Irish Pop Act.

Westlife, Gabrielle, Enrique Iglesias and Ronan Keating were amongst the performers.
