PHILADELPHIA (Greater Media Philadelphia) - Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK (102.9 FM / Philadelphia) will declare the long-awaited winner of the search for the 2nd Annual WMGK Houseband on Friday, August 25th from 8 p.m. - 10 p.m. at Cavanaugh's River Deck on 417 North Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19123.
Cavanaugh's River Deck is the final stop in a selection process that began over two months ago when hundreds of audition tapes and CDs flooded the MGK studios. Sixteen Philadelphia area bands were selected to begin the competition July 27th at Rock Lobster in Philadelphia, with preliminary rounds held weekly at Kildare's Irish Pub in Headhouse Square (8/3), Dave & Buster's in Philadelphia (8/10), and Bourbon Blue in Manayunk (8/17).
The final four bands will compete Friday night, August 25th at 8 p.m. for a package of "Rock Star" perks. The winning band will receive a $3,000 band equipment makeover from Guitar Center, two days recording time at Big Sky Audio Recording Studio in Springfield, PA, and a chance to open the show at WMGK's 7th Annual "Let Freedom Rock Fest," July 4, 2007, at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ. Last year's attendance topped 65,000 WMGK listeners for a free concert with Foreigner and the current WMGK Houseband, Cry Wolf. The 2005 WMGK Houseband, Cry Wolf from Williamstown, NJ, opened for such renowned classic rockers as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Blue Oyster Cult, and The Doobie Brothers during their 2005 reign of rock.
Local bands participating include: Modern Bliss from Delaware County, Wit's End from Atlantic County and Philadelphia, The Toonz from Camden County and Dyin' Breed from Delaware County. Guest judges at the Houseband finals will include local celebrity and "6ABC" / WPVI-TV anchorwoman Monica Malpass. The Search for the WMGK Houseband for 2006 will be a night of rock n' roll culminating with the crowning of our new 2006 WMGK Houseband. Admission is free from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. and open to the public with plenty of free parking available at nearby parking lots.
