BOSTON, MA. (Aberdeen City Website) - Continuing their winning streak with fans and critics alike, Dovecote/RED Ink recording artists ABERDEEN CITY won two highly-respected and coveted distinctions at the 2006
Boston Music Awards which were held on
September 27th at Boston's Avalon Ballroom. As one of only two bands to win multiple awards (their friends The Dresden Dolls were the other), Aberdeen City were awarded "Local Album of the Year" for their 2006 debut album The Freezing Atlantic and "Local Rock Band."
"It feels tingly in a good way to know that while we're out there doing our thing, Boston has our back," beamed guitarist Ryan Heller, who along with the rest of the band, was unable to attend the ceremony as they were playing a gig in St. Petersburg, FL with Electric Six. "When bands come out of New York these days, they're New York bands in the same way it was with Los Angeles bands in the 80's and Seattle bands in the 90's," Ryan continues about Boston's rich musical spectrum. "But when bands come out of Boston, people don't know they're from Boston. I think that's because there isn't really a predominant scene here. It's more like a bunch of mini scenes with lots of good bands making good music."
Largely originating in Chicago (guitarist Chris McLaughlin hails from Connecticut), the four members of Aberdeen City pulled together while attending Boston College and made an indelible mark on the Boston music scene. With producer Nic Hard (The Church, The Bravery) at the helm, The Freezing Atlantic was released independently on Dovecote Records in late 2005 to critical acclaim. Sensing the specialness of this record, uber-producer Steve Lillywhite joined the crusade by re-recording two tracks (the opening track "Another Seven Years" and the single/video "God Is Going To Get Sick of Me") while RED Ink jumped in to insure the album reached even stronger distribution.
Aberdeen City are currently on the road for an extensive national tour as main support for Electric Six (The Blue Van opens) straight through until November. They play Orlando's The Social this evening.
