Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley died, as suspected, from an accidental heroin and cocaine overdose,
James Apa, a public health spokesperson for Seattle and King County, Washington, told.
The toxicology report also revealed that Staley died on April 5, the same day that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain shot himself amidst his own struggles with heroin addiction in 1994.
Apa gave the official statement: "The King County Medical Examiner's office has determined the cause and manner of death for Layne Staley. The cause of death was acute intoxication due to the combined effects of opiate, heroin, and cocaine. The manner of death is accident," he said.
Staley's body was found at his home in Seattle on April 19. Paraphernalia used to inject heroin was found near his body. His well-documented battle with drug addiction during the mid-'90s led to Alice In Chain's inactivity, although the platinum-selling band never officially broke up.
Following Staley's death, the members of the band, including guitarist Jerry Cantrell, issued a statement that said, "Mostly, we are feeling heartbroken over the death of our beautiful friend. He was a sweet man with a keen sense of humor and a deep sense of humanity. He was an amazing musician, an inspiration, and a comfort to so many. He made great music and gifted it to the world. We are proud to have known him, to be his friend, and to create music with him."
