PHILADELPHIA, PA (Top40 Charts/ Drexel News Bureau) - Drexel alumnus and music producer Howard Benson is a nominee for a Grammy Award in the 'Producer of the Year, non-classical' category. The winner will be announced this Sunday, Feb. 11 at the 49th Grammy Awards to be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Producer of Popaganda and some tracks off of Decadence, Benson is competing against Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and DJ Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley).

Benson, who graduated from Drexel in 1980, has worked with bands such as Chris Daughtry, Meriweather, Pretty Boy Floyd, Saosin, Sepultura, Papa Roach, Hazen Street and My Chemical Romance.

During a recent visit to Drexel, he spoke with students enrolled in the University's music industry program, which includes the student-run record label, MAD Dragon Records. He spoke about his journey from studying materials engineering at Drexel to a successful career in the music industry.

Benson got his first break in 1988 when he produced TSOL's album Hit and Run. It was the first time one of his songs 'The Name is Love' was played on the radio. From there he went on to making a completely jazz album and secured his first big record deal with a band called Bang Tango.
