LOS ANGELES (DMB Fans Forum Web) - As John Mayer's star has continued to rise with his major-label debut album, Room For Squares, one comment the singer-songwriter has had to endure is the comparisons made between his music and that of Dave Matthews. Mayer tells that it took him a while to accept that line of thinking. "I thought, oh my God, wouldn't that just be the worst--that I've got all my stuff going on, I've worked my ass off, and all the sudden now people aren't gonna give me a shot because they go, 'No thanks, we have one'?," he said. "And once I learned that wasn't even the case, that's when I started going, 'Alright, so I own Dave Matthews records and I've heard them and I've been influenced by them.' Because I can challenge people's notion of that because I am confident in the music that I make and the kind of work that I do." Still, he tells that it could be worse. "I'd rather sound like Dave Matthews than, you know, Nickelback," he joked. "I'm just waiting for, like, a notarized letter from David Matthews himself saying, 'This man does not sound like me.' We'll fax it out." Room For Squares can be found at Number 25 on the current US Album chart. Meanwhile, its breakout single, "No Such Thing," climbs to Number 46 on the US Singles chart.
