First, the Brooklyn-based guitar firebrand leads a special edition of Bryan Vargas & ¡Ya Està! Canada! for two nights at Trane Studio, March 22 & 23, joined by ¡Ya Està! drummer Matt Baranello, Brownman and a stellar band of Toronto jazz & world musicians, including: Sundar Viswanathan (saxes & flutes), Marc Rogers (electric bass) & Ruben Esguerra (percussion). These shows will focus on Vargas' highly original hybrid of Afro-Latin-jazz, Puerto Rican folkloric, salsa, funk and urban influences; as recorded on ¡Ya Està!'s acclaimed 2004 debut CD "Afro Latino Soul". Afro-Latin aficionados will also recognize Vargas as a founding member of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.
Prior to the Thursday concert, Vargas will giving a workshop, Basic Guitar in a Latin Groove Context; as part of Long & McQuade University. This workshop, sponsored in part by Small World Music and Worlds of Music Toronto , runs from 7-9 pm at Long & McQuade Musical Instruments' downtown Toronto store which is at 925 Bloor St. W., just west of Ossington.
On Saturday March 24, the scene shifts southeastward to the Savannah Room, where Vargas and Baranello will be special guests of Toronto's one and only Afro-Colombian jazz/funk/urban band Ruben Esguerra & Chiva , led by Colombian-born conguero & music-directed by Canada's pre-eminent Latin-jazz trumpeters. Chiva will be rounded out by: Eric Boucher (keyboards), Chris Lamont (drums) and Tyler Emond (bass). This will be Brownman's final Toronto show before leaving for the Jazzmatazz Vol 4 U.S. CD release tour with original rap-jazzers Guru's Jazzmatazz, so expect him to leave it all out there for Toronto fans.
