PILTON, UK (Glastonburyfestivals.co.uk Official Website) - Veteran rocker Rod Stewart and smooth soul singer Isaac Hayes took the stage on the final night of the Glastonbury Festival, capping a peaceful return for an event troubled by crime and crowd control problems. Britain's largest summer rock show was canceled last year after thousands of gatecrashers caused overcrowding in 2000. Security at this year's festival, which ended Sunday, was bolstered by a 12-foot steel fence around the 900-acre site. Police said the event was largely trouble-free. Crime fell by more than half from 2000, with 583 reported crimes and 228 arrests. There were 78 drug arrests and "no sizable seizures" of drugs, Avon and Somerset Police said. Some 100,000 people paid $150 to attend the three-day event, which also featured Nelly Furtado, Coldplay, Stereophonics, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Glastonbury was first held in 1970 on Michael Eavis' Worthy Farm near Pilton, 120 miles southwest of London. This year's event was expected to raise $1.1 million for charities including Oxfam and Greenpeace.
