New York, NY. (Top40 Charts/ Water Taxi Beach Official Website) - Very simply, it's called The Beach Party. But don't let the basic name fool you; there's more going on than hustling through the sand at the little beach in Long Island City. On Saturday nights from June 30 to
September 1 this year at Water Taxi Beach, a few special guests are joining residents Justin Carter, Probus and the Brothers' Brothers to continue the tradition that began last year with Saturday night sets by DJs like Metro Area and Quantic.
This season, The Beach Party hosts some legends, some unsung heroes of New York, and some big guns from across the globe, giving each control of the covered, wooden dancefloor in the sand for a few hours.
It begins with Prins Thomas, the neo-disco king from Norway who's a collaborator with Hans-Peter Lindstrom and at the helms of the great label Full Pupp. The next week features Sasha Crnobrnja from In Flagranti, whose sets are the pinnacle of all the genres floating around the city right now post- punk, neo-disco, punk funk at his hands, it all comes together seamlessly. July 14 features, rather appropriately, a Frenchman. DJ Gilb'R, is half of Chateau Flight, a Parisian duo (that also features I:Cube) whose luscious French house is at the pinnacle of the genre. Turntables on the Hudson takes the decks to the East River on July 21, and the legendary Grandmaster Flash, a hop-hop pioneer whose sets are no less essential than when he was rocking wreck rooms back in the late 70s, comes to show everyone how a party is done on July 28.
On August 4th, Tim Sweeney, the staple DJ from the ever-on-point DFA stable and the host of WNYU's Beats in Space radio show, drops one of his deliciously varied sets of dance music. On August 11 a true rarity occurs on the beach: the Underground Resistance Assault DJ Squad hasn't played a gig in New York in quite a long time, and they've pulled out the stops for this one. Veteran Suburban Knight, is spinning alongside their current prolific producer Skurge, and the UR New York representative Nomadico. That one's going to be one for the books. On August 18, Akalepse, a weekly resident at APT and Truth and Soul affiliate, makes the vibe as nice as it can get with soul, hip-hop, and funk mixed absolutely perfectly. You'll have a smile plastered on your face for the whole set. Zombie Nation, known best for the anthem Kernkraft 400, has grown up quite a bit since that track got so big in the late 90s. Rather than anthemic rave jams, he's refined his sound to something that fuses crunchy organic textures into techno. It'll get a full showcase with a live set on August 25.
The last blast on September 1 is with Innervisions boss Dixon, who brings along Alex from Tokyo, a New York resident who makes music for the stellar label. If Dixon's recent Body Language mix on Get Physical is any clue about what's to come that night, there couldn't be a fitter ending.
