CAMBRIDGE, MAS. (Top40 Charts/ Longy School of Music) - The Longy School of Music announced today that Sergey Antonov, a young Russian who will continue his studies at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts beginning in September, has won the coveted International Tchaikovsky Competition. The competition is one of the world's most prestigious classical music competitions in which young, first-class musicians gather from around the world.

'We are honored to have Sergey Antonov joining us in Cambridge,' said Longy President Karen Zorn. 'He is one of the most gifted cellists of his generation.'

Born in 1983, Sergey Antonov started playing cello at the age of 5. Sergey is a graduate of the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Maria Zhuravleva and Moscow Conservatory where he was a student of Natalia Shakhovskaya. He has made solo appearances with St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Budapest Symphony Orchestras as well as other orchestras throughout Russia. For the past two years, Sergey was a participant of the young composers festival "Young Academies of Russia" which took place in St. Petersburg. His participation in the festival resulted in an offer to record his first CD with a pianist Pavel Raekerus, which was released in 2004 on a "New Classics" Label. The CD includes the works of Rachmaninov and Myaskovsky. In March Sergey has won the First Prize in ASTA National Solo Competition (cello), Detroit (2007).

Antonov, also a student of the distinguished cellist and teacher Terry King, will enter Longy's Graduate Performance Diploma program in the fall.
