Hollywood Cure for Pain is a movement of people in the entertainment industry to help raise awareness and find a cure for people that suffer from various pain disorders. Approximately 50-75 million Americans suffer from persistent chronic pain. Many are unable to work and even perform basic daily living activities. Estimated loss of productivity costs to the U.S. economy range from 60-100 billion dollars per year. Chronic pain manifests itself in 70% of all cancer patients, HIV, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, back pain, ALS, post stroke, underrepresented rare pain disorders (such as erythromelalgia), central pain syndrome (post stroke pain) and numerous other conditions. A 2001 survey in the Lancet determined that more than half of 500 terminally ill patients still experienced moderate to severe pain.
The founder suffers from RSD, the same disease that Paula Abdul has, and several other chronic pain disorders.
