AT A GLANCE

Wednesday, February 6th
Indie 103.1 Presents Bedouin Soundclash, Westbound Train, Beat Union Named after Israeli fusion artist/producer Badawi's 1996 release - which pays homage to nomadic Arabic poet tribe the Bedouins - power trio Bedouin Soundclash formed in 2001 at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Unlike most musicians who try to mimic their musical idols, Bedouin Soundclash forges their own musical path creating music embodying each member's personal and diverse musical preferences. With a seductive combination of lead singer Jay Malinowski's soulful wail and hypnotic rhythmic guitar grooves, Eon Sinclair's deep dubbing bass, and Pat Pengelly's driving rhythms, Bedouin Soundclash creates its own innovative fusion of reggae, rock, punk and soul.

The Duhks
For four years now, the Duhks, the band of five skilled, high-energy, tattooed twenty-somethings from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been riveting audiences and winning staunch fans across North America and around the world with their brand of vital acoustic music. Since the release of their self-titled, Bela Fleck-produced album in 2005, and the consequent re-release of their Canadian debut, Your Daughters and Your Sons, as well as this year's Sugar Hill release Migrations, the band has won admirers as diverse as David Crosby, Dolly Parton, and Doc Watson. They blend soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music, interweaving these acoustic styles with a ferocity that could only be called rock 'n' roll. Their unique sound has also earned them a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Country Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo category, one Juno Award, two additional Juno nominations, two Folk Alliance awards, and an Americana Music Association nomination for Best Emerging Artists.

Wednesday, February 13th
Estradasphere
Estradasphere dedicates their art to interpreting and developing the underlying musical currents of time and place. Rather than shamelessly showcasing their instrumental prowess, the six-piece band from Santa Cruz, California draws on their broad scope of musicianship to explore the possibilities of the future, and more importantly, the past.
Connecting to music by playing real instruments (violin, upright bass, guitar, accordion, organ, Japanese Shamisen, drums) and a shifting variety of instrumentations (chamber ensemble, jazz combo, gypsy metal band, Sixties film rock, etc.), Estradasphere holds the door for our individual and collective understanding of music.

Thursday, February 14th
Lorene Drive, Just Surrender, Farewell
This hard-working band from the lovely town of Victorville, California, has been tearing it us since 2002. They are vets of three Warped Tours and have survived Taste of Chaos as well. Recently, their music was featured in the popular Amped series for XBox 360.

Friday, February 15th
Chow Nasty
"It's clear that Chow Nasty are here to make the party...They're more photocopied fanzine than a hipster rock textbook. In these days of post-post modernism, Chow Nasty are a low-irony treat that defies categorization to the benefit of all in ear-shot.'-Noisepop
'One day Chow Nasty are gonna rule the world…Their goofy, balls-out shows come off like some kind of underage, over-sexed punk b-boy Rolling Stones revival.' - San Francisco Guardian
'We're talking 'Wooly Bully' covered by Wesley Willis, then remixed by Fatboy Slim. (They) could blow the roof off an Animal House as easily woo the sophisticates.' - SF Weekly

Saturday, February 16th
A Static Lullaby, Take the Crown
Post-hardcore/alternative rock outfit A Static Lullaby came together in 2001 after a casual high school jam session led its members to quit their existing bands and form a new group. Within two weeks they were gigging, and soon they had recorded and released their EP Withered. Working with Snapcase/Hatebreed producer Steve Evetts led to the 2003 release …And Don't Forget to Breathe. The band hit the road for a solid year in support of the record, which led to a deal with Columbia, for who Faso Latido was recorded. Internal shakeups within the band were followed by a departure from Columbia, but the band returned refreshed, hooked up again with producer Evetts, signed to Fearless records and released their recent eponymous CD.

Wednesday, February 20th
Wintersleep
Following the release of their 2005 self-titled sophomore album, Wintersleep spent months on the road touring through Canada, America and Europe. Upon return to their native Halifax, the band enlisted the ear of veteran producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian and Super Furry Animals), and hid themselves in the studio for April and May of 2007. It was during this time that the ten tracks of Welcome... grew into their final stunning form. The album shows continuity with the band's previous work, but also marks a significant development. The uneasy pacing of "Drunk on Aluminum" voyages into unexpected depths as the song's plaintive notes collect themselves into an offensive against the darkness that threatens to engulf.

Thursday, February 21st
Girl in A Coma, Killola, Oslo, Lisa Dewey
Hailing from San Antonio, Girl in a Coma's singer Nina Diaz was 12 when the band formed. She's a powerhouse vocalist, compared to icons as diverse as Bjork, Patsy Cline and Morrissey. The band as a whole have been likened to the Pixies, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, not surprisingly, the Smiths. The all-girl trio recorded their first demo with Boz Borrer, musical director for Morrissey, in London in 2004. In 2006, they were picked for SI TV's docu-series Jammin ', where they were flown to New York and had a surprise meeting with their idol Joan Jett. Joan and her long-time producer and songwriting partner, Kenny Laguna, signed the band right their on camera to their Blackheart Records. Since then the girls haven't looked back. They've toured with Social Distortion, The Pogues, The Smoking Popes, Frank Black and The Catholics, and with the man himself, Morrissey.

Saturday, February 23rd
The Redwalls, Catfish Haven
'The new self-titled album by the Redwalls is a taut collection of seriously catchy tunes, full of killer riffs and vocals that are sometimes almost heartbreakingly sweet. Overall the music feels like an expert blend of the Fab Four's carefully crafted pop and the fuzzy, frantic garage of all those hungry little bands that put out two mind-blowing singles 40 years ago and still turn up on Nuggets-style comps.' - Miles Raymer / Chicago Reader APPEARING ON LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, WED JAN 23—Hey, that's tonight!!

Thursday, February 28th
Funland featuring East Bay Ray & Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys, Killroy, Societys Parasites, Small Steppes, Homesick Abortions We're not exactly sure what half of the original Dead Kennedys have up their sleeves, but as their side project is named after a Kennedys song ('Funland at the Beach'), we can only assume it will be Kennedys inspired and fully punkiriffic. The presence of Circle One—a quarter century on and still wreaking havoc—should prepare us for a night of done-the-way-you-remember-it punk rock.

Wednesday, March 5th
The Autumns, The Photo Atlas, The Secret 6
7:30 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
Obviously the English press likes them, so we should too! "The Autumns are masters of structure and dynamics... unutterably beautiful but also hugely powerful." - The Times of London, 4 Star review
"Never soars at anything lower than 30,000 feet.' - Mojo, 4 Stars, Recommended
"No self-respecting indie fan should be without it.' - NME

Thursday, March 6th
The Hanks CD Release Party
7:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
The Hanks claim to be pregnant—with their second album! If it's a boy it's named Distance, if it's a girl it's named Jasmine, and, well, we already know it's a boy, what with modern science and all. The Hanks take cues from songwriters like Elvis Costello and Paul Simon, then mix in enough jagged rhythms, sparking keyboards and crashing guitars to keep any modern rock fan happy. Together for eight years now, the band's debut album, Your New Attraction, was released on the rip-roarin' Caffeine Teen label.

Friday, March 7th
The Blind Boys of Alabama
8:00 PM, $30 advance, $35 day of show
The Blind Boys of Alabama have spread the spirit and energy of pure soul gospel music for over 60 years, ever since the first version of the group formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. Today, founding members Clarence Fountain and Jimmy Carter are joined by more recent arrivals Bishop Billy Bowers, Joey Williams, Ricky McKinnie, Bobby Butler, and Tracy Pierce on a mission to expand the audience for traditional soul-gospel singing while incorporating contemporary songs and innovative arrangements into their hallowed style. The group toiled for more than 40 years on the traditional gospel circuit. But in 1983, their career reached a turning point with their crucial role in The Gospel at Colonus, the smash hit musical drama created by Bob Telson and Lee Breuer. This Obie Award-winning Off-Broadway and Broadway success, coupled with their appearance on two original soundtrack albums (in 1984 and 1988), brought the Blind Boys' timeless sound to an enthusiastic new audience.

The 1992 album Deep River - produced by Booker T. Jones and featuring a transcendent version of Bob Dylan's 'I Believe in You' - earned the Blind Boys their first Grammy Award nomination. In 1995, the Blind Boys released the roof-raising live album I Brought Him with Me; it was followed (in 1997) by Holding On, an experiment in funked-up contemporary gospel.

Monday, March 10th
This Is Hell, Elysia, Ruiner, Soliders
7:00 PM, $10
This is Hell have proved that they put the 'strong' in Strong Island. Formed on the island in June of 2004, the band came together with members from Scraps and Heart Attacks, and Subterfuge. They came out with a big buzz, sold out the initial pressing of their first demo, and quickly signed to Trustkill Records by 2005. The band soon hit the road with such heavy hitters as Bane, Strike Anywhere, Modern Life is War, Bayside, Comeback Kid, and Ignite, and they were selected to open for Glassjaw on several east coast dates of their reunion tour, and have also shared the stage with Deftones, Atreyu, and Killswitch Engage.

Tuesday, March 11th
Gavin DeGraw
A New York born singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist, DeGraw released his debut album Chariot on J Records in 2003, which produced 3 hit singles, "I Don't Want to Be," "Chariot" and "Follow Through." Chariot, a remarkably accomplished and compelling first effort, introduced the world to a vital, magnetic young artist whose abundant talent and charisma originally drew hometown fans to his live shows. One year later Gavin released a fan driven project, entitled Chariot Stripped, an acoustic re-recording of Chariot, showcasing the growth and energy these tracks garnered from DeGraw's constant touring. His album reached platinum sales status shortly after, and DeGraw easily sold out headlining dates, presenting his intimate, emotionally intense live performance to SRO audiences, as well as on major national television shows such as Late Show With David Letterman, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, among others. His songs have been featured in many television shows, most notably his hit single, "I Don't Want to Be" as the theme song for the WB hit, "One Tree Hill."
